What is a CLAUDE.md / AGENTS.md?: It is a plain-text rule file in your repo root that tells AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Gemini CLI) your stack, conventions, and guardrails. Agents read it on every task so they stay consistent instead of guessing.
Which format should I pick?: CLAUDE.md for Claude Code, AGENTS.md for the open Agents standard, .cursorrules for older Cursor setups, GEMINI.md for Gemini CLI. They hold the same content — pick the tool you use, or keep all four in sync.
